Mykonos, Greece
City Branding
Mykonos is a picturesque island located in the islands of Greece. Known for its stunning beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters, Mykonos is a popular destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and vibrant nightlife. With its white homes, blue waters, and sunny skies, it brings relaxation and magic to all who visit. With its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant atmosphere, Mykonos captivates visitors from around the world.
Challenge
The challenge is to design city branding for Mykonos. The task at hand is to maintain the history of the city and the Greek culture for the locals who live there, while still marketing to tourists and visitors. This requires a delicate balance of honoring the island's heritage and traditions while also showcasing its allure to a global audience.
Research & Inspiration
Research
During my research process, I focused on the main attractions of the city and what draws people to it. Because I’m focusing on translating the historical aspect of the city into my branding process, this was important for me to overall capture the feeling of the city.
Moodboard
When researching for my moodboard, I was heavily inspired by Grecian textiles, patterns, colors and the structures of the buildings there, as it is an essential part of the culture. When it came to font research, I was drawn to tall serif type faces that represented the structures of the buildings.
Sketches
When sketching, I focused on fonts that I felt captured the tranquil yet vibrant essence of Mykonos. These fonts inspired me to create ornamentation reminiscent of Grecian textiles and patterns, complementing the typography. Now, my next step is to digitize and refine these ideas.
Digital Drafts
Round 1
After refining the design, it became clear which ideas were more effective than others. Some proved too busy for a scalable logo, while others leaned too heavily into clichés of Greecian culture, whereas I had a desire for subtlety.
Round 2
In refining my design, I realized the third idea was too busy. However, I liked the font's aesthetic. To simplify, I integrated the decorative dots from the serifs directly into the logo. This streamlined the design while preserving its unique charm.
Final Design
Resolution
Designing this logo was a fun challenge! I wanted to capture the calm, magical vibe of the blue city while celebrating its Greek heritage. I did lots of research on traditional patterns and found ways to blend them with modern elements. It was a great learning experience—I got to figure out which elements were important to include and which ones weren't. I'm proud of how the logo turned out—it really reflects the spirit and culture of the city while maintaining the serene nature of a location visitors seek out for a relaxing vacation.
